Cholangiocarcinoma Surgery is performed to treat cancer of the bile ducts, known as cholangiocarcinoma. Treatment often involves removing the tumor and any surrounding tissue that may be affected, which can include liver resection or bile duct reconstruction.
In some cases, surgery can be curative if the cancer is localized to the bile ducts, but in more advanced stages, palliative surgery may be performed to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life. Liver resection may also be necessary if the tumor extends into the liver.
Postoperative care includes managing pain, monitoring for infection, and ensuring adequate nutrition. Chemotherapy or radiation therapy may also be recommended after surgery to address any remaining cancer cells.
Cholangiocarcinoma surgery offers the best chance for survival, particularly in early-stage disease. However, given the complexity and location of bile duct cancer, surgery may be combined with other treatments for optimal outcomes.
