Functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is a comprehensive assessment used to evaluate an individual’s ability to perform work-related or daily tasks. It measures strength, endurance, flexibility, and other aspects of physical function to help determine the extent of disability, readiness to return to work, or the need for accommodations. FCE is often used after injury, surgery, or illness to assess the individual’s recovery and identify limitations or areas needing improvement.
During an FCE, the patient performs a series of tasks designed to assess functional capabilities, such as lifting, walking, and carrying objects. The evaluation helps determine work readiness or the need for further rehabilitation. It is often used in workers' compensation cases, disability assessments, and pre-employment screenings.
Functional capacity evaluations provide valuable insights into an individual’s physical capabilities and limitations, allowing for informed decision-making regarding rehabilitation, work accommodations, or return to work.
